What Happens When Your Muscles Start Getting Eaten Away: Anti-catabolism

One thing that you do not want to happen after you have worked so hard to attain solid muscles is catabolism. This is what causes muscles to break down. When your muscles start to break down, or get eaten away, the result is the muscle mass turns to fat.

Why Muscle Mass Breaks Down

There are two main reasons why muscle mass breaks down and begins to get eaten away. One is that you do not continue to exercise on a regular basis. The second has to do with the proteins in your diet. If you stop exercising or stop taking in proteins, you will start to experience catabolism, which is the process where your muscles start to break down and turn to fat.

This is often worse than not having any toned muscles at all. The muscles that you worked so hard to achieve will no longer be rock solid. Your body will become very soft and, there will be fatty tissue on your body. You will then have to work twice as hard to try to rid yourself of the effects of catabolism.

How to Prevent Catabolism

In order to stop catabolism from happening to you, you will want to continue your workout routine and take protein supplements that offer anti-catabolism effects. Anti-catabolism supplements are those that can provide you with the proteins that you need, such as those that are derived from essential amino acids. Your body does not naturally produce these types of proteins. However you can acquire them through your diet. When you take anti-catabolism supplements, you are making sure that you continue receiving proteins that will enable you to retain your muscles and not allow them to waste away.

Taking anti-catabolism supplements, however, does not mean that you can stop working out. You also need to continue with your regular workouts so that you can continue to maintain your muscles. If you stop working out, you will start to see the erosion of your muscles as they start to get eaten away because of non-use and the muscle mass is converted into fat.

The process of catabolism does not take place overnight. But if you stop your workout and stop feeding your muscles proteins you will begin to notice a change in your muscles after about a week. They will become softer as the muscle slowly starts to get eaten away by the lack of blood flow, oxygen and protein that were once fed to it regularly to allow it to stay strong. If you continue with this process, catabolism takes place where the muscles are no longer hard and strong but become weak and flabby. Instead of having hard muscles that you worked hard to achieve, you will have soft body fat tissue in its place.

In order to prevent catabolism, you should take an anti-catabolism supplement that will insure you get the proper proteins and also continue with your regular workouts.
