Tell Pests to Bug Off with Essential Oils
This entry was posted on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 at 3:02 pm and is filed under Alternative Health Care, Health and Nutrition ArticlesDuring the summertime, repelling insects is a top priority. Instead of turning to the usual chemical-infused bug sprays or toxic creams, though, you can choose from a blend of potent essential oils. Essential oils can be applied topically or simply inhaled for their aromatherapeutic benefits, but did you know that some can also be used to repel insects and treat bug bites? Not only are essential oils a more natural option, but they can offer skin healing and rejuvenating benefits as well.
Essential oils have long been used to treat illnesses, manage disease, or balance out troubled skin. Aromatherapy and essential oils are an important part of homeopathic medicine, but they also have practical applications for a variety of conditions.
Bugs, Begone
Because harsh chemical bug sprays and creams can trigger skin allergies, natural bug repellants can be a better choice. The most powerful natural repellant against mosquitoes and other insects is citronella oil. Citronella candles are a common sight at backyard barbecues.
Other essential oils that can be combined for a natural insect repellant include:
- Lemon.
- Rosemary.
- Pine.
- Cypress
- Peppermint.
- Eucalyptus.
- Geranium.
- Cedarwood.
The Essential Oils Desk Reference, compiled by Essential Science Publishing, recommends a blend of pure almond, peppermint, tea tree, and eucalyptus oils for a natural bug repellant. These can be applied directly to the skin as a basic moisturizer and easily repel insects and other bugs naturally. Even children can benefit from these potent oils, since they are nourishing for sensitive skin and generally will not lead to allergic reactions.
Take the Sting Out of Bug Bites
Bug bites are often associated with itching, swelling, and an uncomfortable rash. In some cases, they can lead to skin allergies and infections, which need to be dealt with immediately. A prevention plan using a natural insect repellant is the best option during camping or outdoor activities, especially when the weather is hot and humid. A variety of essential oils can help reduce inflammation of the skin and treat bug bites, including:
- Lavender.
- Tea tree oil.
- Chamomile.
Chamomile and lavender can help reduce swelling and are naturally very soothing. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic and can help with healing wounds, as well as keeping the area clean to avoid infection. Since most bug bites are harmless, simply treating the skin with a few natural combinations can have lasting benefits. A simple way to apply the mixture is to add a few drops to bathwater and have a soak; another option is to apply a few drops to a hot or cold compress, which in turn soothes the skin directly.
Managing skin problems with preventive care is just as important as treating a specific condition. Insect repellants can help reduce the chances of bug bites, but there are still natural ways to manage bug bites and stings after they occur.
