Memory-Enhancing Remedies

This entry was posted on Monday, January 28th, 2008 at 2:14 pm and is filed under Alternative Health Care, Health and Nutrition Articles

We live in a complex society today, and while modern technology is there to help us cope in our daily lives, many of us wonder if we aren’t becoming victims of information overload. Other people search for a solution to their age-related memory problems. Rather than reaching for a prescription drug in these situations, we can turn to some natural remedies that have been used for centuries in successfully treating a variety of illnesses and are now known to enhance memory as well. This article will take a look at some of the most beneficial of these remedies.

Siberian ginseng: Siberian ginseng (eleuthero) is an adoptogen, an element used to help people deal with their physical and emotional stress. It is known to improve concentration and memory and can also help reduce blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels.

If you have a history of heart attacks or high blood pressure, be sure to use eleuthero under the supervision of a health-care professional. Diabetics should avoid taking it in large quantities, because this may lead to the development of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It may also interfere with oral drugs and insulin used to treat diabetes, and when it is taken along with drugs that relieve sleeplessness, this combination may result in mental impairment or sedation.

This remedy is produced in a variety of forms, including liquid extracts and capsules with dried root powder. While the dosage varies, taking it for more than eight weeks is usually not recommended.

Bacopa: Another adoptogen, bacopa supports the individual’s memory, concentration, and metal sharpness. It has no serious side effects and is generally well-tolerated. As always, you should seek professional advice before beginning a wellness plan that includes this herb. Recommended doses for adults and teens vary from 125 mg to 500 mg daily.

Ashwagandha: Another general performance enhancer, ashwagandha also helps the body resist disease. Commercially, it is available in liquid herbal extract, tablet, and capsule form, and the average dose is 300 mg (powdered root). Pregnant women are urged to use this herb in moderation, and in general, it can have a sedative effect on the central nervous system. It is also taken to increase energy and reduce fatigue, boost the immune system, and slow the process of aging.

Gotu kola: Those who practice yoga often use gotu kola to increase their meditation skills, since it helps to improve their focus, concentration, and mental alertness. It also enhances an individual’s IQ, and is used in treating mental retardation.

Supplements made from this herb are available in various strengths, and high levels of ingestion should be avoided. It should not be used by pregnant women, mothers who are breast-feeding, or people taking sedatives of any kind.

Ginkgo: Ginkgo capsules and tablets, usually made from ginkgo leaf extract, are often used to treat dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease) and improve memory in general. Because it can sometimes lead to physical discomfort or severe allergic reaction, ginkgo should always be taken under the supervision of a health-care professional.
