Few herbs are as important in religious traditions as they are in folk remedies, but holy basil fits that description. Holy basil derives its name from its importance in Hindu religious rituals. Thought to help inspire concentration and sharpen the memory, the plant is commonly grown around temples and in the courtyards of religious families’ homes. The holy basil plant itself is worshiped as a deity, and it is an important feature in Hindu life.

The Plant

Holy basil, also known as tulsi, grows in warm climates as a perennial herb or small shrub. It has a sharp, distinctive scent and comes in red and green-leaved varieties. Holy basil is closely related to the variety of basil that’s commonly used for cooking. Aside from its religious significance, holy basil is known for its medicinal properties and is used as a treatment for a variety of conditions, especially in Ayurvedic (traditional Hindu) medicine.

Its Uses

Though it’s been used medicinally for centuries, holy basil is very much a modern remedy, particularly in India. As people living in Western countries have become more open to the potential of herbal remedies, the use of holy basil has increased in other cultures as well. The herb has a variety of applications.

Memory and Concentration

Holy basil is used to stimulate recall, and it may help students retain more information.

Respiratory Relief

The herb is often used to treat conditions such as coughs, colds, asthma, bronchitis, and the flu. Holy basil is said to help clear the lungs.

Stress Reduction

Taking holy basil can help relieve and prevent stress. It is widely used in India for this purpose, and studies show it is clinically effective.

Bug Off

Holy basil can be used to repel biting insects, and it’s also used topically to treat bug bites.

Eye Health

Some people rely on holy basil to strengthen their night vision and to relieve tired or sore eyes.

Fevers and Headaches

Holy basil is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to help reduce fevers and treat headaches. It can be taken orally, or the leaves can be used to make a compress.

Sore Throat Soother

The healing power of holy basil may reduce the pain of a sore throat. It can be taken as a drink or gargled for quick relief.

Versatility Is a Virtue

As you can see, holy basil is an incredibly versatile herb. Not only is it an important element in religious rituals, it can also improve memory and well-being, and it can help those who take it find relief from a variety of conditions.

Would you like to test the healing power of holy basil for yourself? The power of the legendary Mother Nature’s medicine, as holy basil is sometimes called, is now widely available. You’ll find it in many products, including herbal teas, drops, essential oils, tablets, and gels.
