Vitex Also Used As an Insect Repellant

Vitex agnus castus, a plant of Mediterranean origin, is widely grown in warmer climes of the sub-tropical and temperate regions. In addition to well-drained soil, it requires partial shade or full sunlight to thrive. It can grow to a height of one to five meters and is very popular because of its aromatic flowers and foliage. This shrub has got many sharp thorns which keeps away animals such as deer from consuming the plant.

The ripening seeds, the flowers and the leaves along with the tender stem growth are all highly valued for their abundant medicinal properties. The leaves and the berries especially are very useful as a tonic herb for the female as well as the male reproductive systems. Greece and Rome were the first places where this shrub was used for treating diseases.
