One of the most overlooked uses for witch hazel is to maintain healthy skin

Here is some information about witch hazel and how it should be a part of everyone’s skin care regimen

What is Witch Hazel?

Witch hazel is a shrub that grows in North America and produces yellow flowers. It can grow to approximately fifteen feet tall. The leaves and bark are used to make tinctures, creams, and other types of lotions. These lotions and creams have a strong astringent quality, meaning they help tighten and firm the skin, can reduce swelling and provide relief from minor aches and pains.

Witch hazel branches were often used to make dousing rods, which were thought to lead people to water. People didn’t need long to realize that witch hazel also had properties that dry the skin, making it a great choice for a healthy skin treatment program.

Witch hazel has been used for centuries for many different health problems, including sprains, laryngitis, the perineum after childbirth, and hemorrhoids. It also can be used on mouth sores to relieve pain, as well the swelling associated with the tonsils during tonsillitis. Witch hazel is also effective in treating swimmer’s ear and insect bites.

Witch Hazel and Skin Care

However, one of the most effective uses for witch hazel is in a skin care regimen. It can help reduce the breakouts associated with acne because of the cleansing properties in the plant. It can remove the dirt and oil that can cause disruptions in the skin. It also dries the skin, which often helps ease the occurrences of acne.

Witch hazel can also help tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of pores. It has excellent skin-firming qualities and can help improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles. With daily use, you will see an improvement in your skin.

Where You Can Find Witch Hazel

Many pharmacies carry witch hazel products. However, these are not recommended for internal use, as most also contain isopropyl alcohol. You can find many concentrated tinctures online, often available in the form of cleansing pads or wipes. No matter which you choose, you can easily reduce the pain and swelling of many of your aching body parts, as well as help keep your skin healthy.

A Few Final Thoughts

Witch hazel has long been touted as the “catch all” for treatment in many health conditions. Its astringent properties can help firm and tighten the skin, as well as reduce swelling and irritation. This product should retain a place in everyone’s medicine cabinet for a wide variety of uses.

There is still ongoing research on all of the wonderful properties of this shrub. More uses for this incredible plant will no doubt be discovered in the near future.

Tea tree oil has many beneficial uses for both humans and pets. Dog owners can help relieve their pets of fleas and ticks by using tea tree oil. This natural antiseptic is safe for dogs and can even relieve pet odor problems.

Flea collars and other medication can end up having negative health consequences on your dog. Yet, as a pet owner, you want to make sure that your pet does not suffer from the discomfort of fleas and ticks or bring them into the house. Many pet owners today look for natural remedies that can get rid of fleas. One of the best ways to get rid of fleas and ticks on your dog is to use a shampoo that contains tea tree oil.

You can also make your own pet flea control shampoo by adding a few drops of tree tea oil to your pet’s shampoo. This will remove the fleas and the itching caused by these pests, as well as the odor from your dog. Tea tree oil is an excellent antiseptic and treatment for your dog’s skin problems and can effectively remove odor.

Flea powders and flea collars are not only toxic to dogs, but to humans as well. If you are looking for ways to holistically treat your dog, tea tree oil is one of the best natural remedies around for getting rid of fleas and other pests that can infect your dog.

Fleas and ticks can infest your dog and make him sick. They are parasites that live off of the host and under the skin. They can get to the point where they travel to the heart or the brain and cause your dog permanent damage or even death.

Unfortunately, most dogs contact fleas as they are outdoors a great deal of the time. Until now, flea collars were viewed as the only protection against fleas, although some pet owners (especially those with young children) are abandoning the idea of using them. Many are opting instead to use a shampoo that contains tea tree oil, or to make a remedy themselves with their own pet shampoo and a few drops of tea tree oil.

Pet owners can purchase shampoos containing tea tree oil at any store that sells all-natural health products for pets. They can also purchase tea tree oil and make their own pet shampoo by adding just a few drops to ordinary shampoo. This is often the least expensive route and just as effective. In addition, the tea tree oil left over from the bottle can be used by humans to address a variety of different skin conditions and acts as an antiseptic. Other uses of tea tree oil include treating foot fungus and relieving arthritis pain.

But most effective mosquito repellents contain harmful chemicals, most notably DEET. That’s where garlic can step in as an effective, natural mosquito repellent.

Mosquitoes. What probably comes to mind when you mention this word are those annoying little flying creatures that flit around you while you are outdoors or camping, leaving frustratingly itchy bites. Most people regard mosquitoes as pests—nothing more than annoying little insects that pose no real danger to their health. In this respect, they cannot be more wrong.

Mosquitoes are, in fact, extremely dangerous creatures. This is not because the mosquitoes themselves can injure people, but because of the diseases that they carry. Mosquitoes are particularly well suited for the role of disease carriers because they travel from one person to the next, drawing in blood from each person they land on. Contained within that blood can be any number of diseases a person might be suffering from.

Diseases Commonly Spread by Mosquitoes

Perhaps the best-known disease spread by mosquitoes is malaria, which is a disease caused by a parasite. Malaria can be carried from an infected person to an uninfected person by mosquitoes that have bitten the infected person. In this way, the disease is quickly transmitted throughout populations of people living close together. Symptoms of malarial fever include headaches, chills, muscle aches and fatigue. Death follows soon after.

Another well-known disease transmitted by mosquitoes is dengue fever. Dengue fever is a particularly virulent disease, and infected patients often experience hemorrhagic fever. Left untreated, dengue fever is likely fatal.

Using Garlic to Repel Mosquitoes

With so many deadly diseases that can be transmitted by the bite of a single mosquito, it is important that people find ways to protect themselves from being bitten. A good way to protect yourself when you venture into areas that you know have mosquitoes is to use a good mosquito repellent. The problem with this, however, is that most commercial mosquito repellents make use of an active ingredient known as DEET. While generally deemed safe when applied to the skin, DEET is easily absorbed by the skin and has been known to cause side effects such as swelling, skin rash and itching.

Instead of using commercial mosquito repellents, should consider using natural mosquito repellents. There are several natural substances that are extremely effective at keeping mosquitoes away. Garlic is among the most effective of these substances, and one of the easiest to obtain. You simply need to make a trip to the local supermarket and buy several cloves of garlic and a small spray bottle.

Once you get home, peel the garlic then mash it in a fine sieve to squeeze out the juices. If you find difficulty mashing whole cloves of garlic, first place the cloves in a food processor for a few second to break them into smaller pieces. Mix the juice from the garlic using the ratio of one part garlic juice to five parts water. Place the resulting solution in a small spray bottle and spray lightly over exposed areas of your skin. This will provide you with five to six hours of protection from mosquitoes.

Omega-6s are also important – and can be beneficial for problems ranging from sore and achy joints to skin conditions. One source of Omega-6 can be found in evening primrose oil.

You have probably heard a great deal about the importance of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet to help stay healthy and promote good heart health. What many people do not tell you is that omega-3 is not the only class of fatty acids that the body needs. Another class used to promote good overall health is the omega-6 class of fatty acids. Just as omega-3 comes from oils – usually fish oils, omega-6 fatty acids are found in oils as well, and evening primrose oil is an excellent source.

The Evening Primrose Flower

The evening primrose flower is a large, delicately constructed wildflower that grows natively in North America. The blooms generally last for only one evening before falling off and the seed pod begins to grow and ripen. The oil extracted from these seeds contains between 50% and 70% of the omega-6 fatty acid known as cis linoleic acid and 7% to 10% of cis gamma linoleic acid. This oil also contains trace amounts of other essential fatty acids and two steroids, campesterol and bet-sitosterol.

Primrose Oil as a Dietary Supplement

As a dietary supplement, evening primrose oil has been tested for its value in treating different conditions and improving one’s health. The oil is taken orally, usually in a gelatin capsule, in a dosage of 6 to 8 grams per day in adults and 2 to 4 grams in children. Although not regulated by the FDA, since evening primrose oil functions as a drug in several ways, care should be used when taking it and you should also inform your doctor you are taking it to avoid certain interactions.

Beneficial Properties of Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil has been shown to be beneficial in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. It does not stop the disease or kill all of the pain, but patients have reported fewer instances of stiff joints and joint tenderness, and a reduction in their pain level using a scale from 1 to 10.

Evidence points to a benefit for multiple sclerosis patients, indicating slowing of the disease’s progression and shorter relapses of lower severity than experienced by people not taking evening primrose oil. Studies are still being conducted to determine the oil’s effectiveness.

Early tests showed promise in the use of evening primrose oil to treat atopic dermatitis and other dermatological conditions. If future studies prove out, the use of evening primrose oil may well be recommended for use by people with certain skin conditions, as a way to improve their appearance.

In Summary

Evening primrose oil contains omega-6 fatty acids proven to have several benefits for the body. These essential fats work to promote better heart health, improve skin tone and appearance, reduce the effects of rheumatoid arthritis, aid patients suffering from MS and several other benefits. Evening primrose is oil is taken as a dietary supplement normally in capsule form. Its usefulness in treating various conditions is still being studied in animals and in human trials. However, several health benefits have been established that make adding evening primrose oil as a supplement a good idea for almost everyone.

Do you suffer from irritating skin rash on your body? Have you tried countless medications, lotions and remedies to no effect? Then perhaps it is time to consider using witch hazel to treat your condition.

Skin rashes are definitely not the most attractive skin condition to suffer from. These rashes are typically recognized for the crusty, red and swollen skin on patients. It is also not uncommon to see lesions, blisters, sores, scarring and even skin ulcers when examining patients with advanced stages of skin rash.

Skin rashes also cause extreme discomfort in patients, including burning and itching sensations in the skin. Some people with extremely severe forms of skin rash find them so frustrating and uncomfortable that they cannot fall asleep unless supremely exhausted. With any form of skin rash, the main objective of medical treatment is to first help relieve the patient of the primary discomfort, and then determine and address the root cause of the problem.

What is Witch Hazel?

Witch hazel is a plant of the genus Hamamelis, a family of flowering plants. The various species of witch hazel can be found throughout North America, China and Japan. While you most probably have not heard of the plant itself, you may have heard of the witch hazel plant with regard to natural treatments for skin rash.

How Witch Hazel Works

The essence of the witch hazel plant, obtained by boiling its bark and leaves to produce a concentrated extract, has proven extremely effective in the treatment of skin rash. The active ingredient in witch hazel that is effective at combating skin rash is a derivative of tanning acid known as catechol tanning. The type of tannin present in witch hazel is very similar to the tannins that found in tea. These substances are extremely effective vasoconstrictors. This means that they can be used to reduce the diameter of the veins and capillaries found just beneath the surface of the skin, constricting these blood vessels and reducing the flow of blood through them. This helps reduce the severity of the skin rash in many patients, and provides effective relief for the itch and discomfort that inevitably accompanies skin rash.

Witch hazel remedies for skin rash can be obtained in one of two ways. The first is through a pharmacy or drugstore. Because of the sheer efficacy of witch hazel extract at relieving the symptoms of skin rash, it is now available in creams and lotions from your local pharmacy or drugstore. If you dislike having to purchase your medication from pharmacies or drugstores, however, you can create your own witch hazel remedy.

Instead of depending on pre-formulated drugs from your local pharmacy, you can instead produce your own supply of witch hazel medication. All you need to do is purchase some witch hazel bark, then boil it in water. For every ounce of witch hazel bark you use, add a full pint of water. You can then use the resulting solution as a treatment for skin rash. Simply soak a cloth in the solution, then apply the cloth to the affected area. Allow the solution to soak into your skin for at least 30 minutes before you rinse the remaining solution off the affected area.

That’s where Rhus Toxicodendron can step in as an effective herbal remedy.

You would not think that a plant that causes a rash would also be a remedy for it, but Rhus Toxicodendron does just that. You have probably been told “leaves of three leave them be,” which refers to poison ivy and the discomfort it causes. However, you be surprised to know that this homeopathic medicine is made from leaves that are collected at night when the plant is most poisonous. The medicinal history of the plant started in the late 18th century when it was used to treat rheumatism and paralysis. The plant belongs to the Anacardiaceae family and grows in the wooded areas and fields in North America.

Some of the ailments that Rhus Toxicodendron is a remedy for include: swollen glands, fever, inflammations of the mucous membranes and the muscles, restlessness and skin conditions. Furthermore your homeopathic doctor could recommend it for a host of complaints that you might have which include poison ivy, back pain, chicken pox, herpes, colds, flu, hives, measles, mumps, nerve pain, sore throat, sprains and muscle strains, arthritis, dermatitis, carpal tunnel, bursitis, fevers and rheumatism.

You would want to pay particular attention to Rhus Toxicodendron if you have arthritic conditions in your joints or muscles. Rhus Toxicodendron is one of the homeopathic remedies for these conditions. Conditions of the skin are a common problem when you are using Rhus Tox and you may suffer from large blisters, hives, moist eruptions, abscesses or eczema. You also might get rashes in the genital region. Inflamed blisters and itchy, red skin that are full of a clear fluid or oozy pus generally accompany poison ivy, chicken pox, or poison oak. Herpes outbreaks also cause inflamed blisters. Cold sores are formed on the lips. You should consult with your physician to discuss the side effects Rhus Toxicodendron might have on you as everyone is different.

Rhus Toxicodendron has been proven to be an effective remedy to treat the skin disorders that show intumescences, redness, and burning. For bright-red erysipelas that is confined to the upper side of your face it is an excellent remedy. During a severe inflammation of the skin Rhus Toxicodendron is often more useful than veratrum and aconite. Also, Eczema, pemphigus, and a host of other inflammatory and irritable skin afflictions are greatly reduced when intumescences, redness, and burning are the major symptoms. This often relieves Erythematous and inflammation of the vulva together with irritation and itching. Rhus Toxicodendron as well also helps with reddened, tumid, and glistening enlargements.

Now you know a little bit more about Rhus Toxicodendron. If you have any skin conditions that were mentioned above you might want to talk to your doctor about Rhus Toxicodendron as a possibly remedy.

It is estimated that in the United States that more than a million cases of skin cancer are reported each year. Most of these cancer cases are reported due to the damage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet radiation otherwise known as UVR.
It is estimated that there is a window during a sunny day that a person risks the most exposure to these ultraviolet rays. The sun usually begins to intensify around 10-11 am, and reaches its peak around 4 pm. These are the hours to use extra caution. Maybe seek the shade of an umbrella or just hit the beach at the later part of the day, after all it does get darker much later in the summer months.

Many experts feel that no tanning method is safe. They say that tanned skin is already an indication that the epidermal DNA has been damaged by the ultraviolet rays. Just one sunburn increases your risk of developing skin cancer. If you incur more than five sunburns your risk of developing melanoma doubles through out your life. Tanning beds are no better than tanning outdoors. Care must be taken by applying the proper sun-block lotions before venturing outside. Sun-block lotions range from 10 SPF to 60 SPF.

SPF, otherwise known as Sun Protection Factor, measures the duration of how long the skin being unprotected can be exposed to the sun UVB rays before burning. A sunscreen formula with an SPF of 30 would prevent a sunburn that is 30 times longer than if no sunscreen was used and the skin was exposed naturally. Besides having a high SPF number, UVA protecting ingredients must be present for maximum protection. These include zinc dioxide, avobenzone, and titanium oxide. Sunscreen should be applied about 30-40 minutes before going outside, and the waterproof formulas that are available work wonders as they do not come off in the pool or the ocean. Pay close attention to children as they need the highest SPF possible, their skin is extremely sensitive. They should only be used on children that are at least 6 months of age.

If you do get sunburned, and it may happen since we do go in and out everyday. You may even try taking Flax seed oil gel caps, and Omega 3 supplements, as these ad vital moisturizer to the skin and will help heal your skin. Look for spots on the skin from time to time as these can be warning signs to go and see a dermatologist. Some of the things to watch for are, skin growth’s or beauty marks that have either changed color, changed diameter, increased in thickness, hurt, itch, or bleed.

By taking the steps necessary for proper sun safety, you and your family will enjoy great times out in the sun, with minimal risk to skin cancers.

If you’ve ever attended Thanksgiving dinner, you know the smell. It’s part of a popular culinary herbal trio often used to spice up the turkey, which also includes rosemary and sage. Rarely growing over a foot high and yielding numerous gray-green stems with tiny oval leaves, this little evergreen’s official botanical name is Thymus vulgaris. You may also find it called common thyme, garden thyme, or French thyme. Receiving its name from the Greeks, it originally meant “to fumigate,” while also symbolizing courage and a source of invigoration. Even then, they knew it possessed medicinal qualities beyond its potent yet pleasant aroma.

Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

The pungent and spicy aroma is due mostly to the rich concentration of essential oils found in this plant. Essential oils not only produce an aroma, they can also affect a variety of bodily functions. Aromatherapy studies the effects that essential oils have on the body. Oils are extracted from a plant source through water or steam distillation, and in the case of common thyme, they come from fresh or partially dried thyme leaves and flower tops. After distillation, the very concentrated essential oils are left, full of physiologically active compounds.

Thyme’s Non-Culinary Uses

Thyme has a long history of use for a variety of ailments, including respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis and pertussis; digestive problems, including diarrhea and indigestion; and, because of its antiseptic properties, fighting bacteria and fungal infections. There is some research suggesting it even has antiviral activity. It is used in many mouthwashes and toothpastes, and as a fragrance in soaps and other toiletries. Essential oil of thyme contains thymol, carvacrol, and a variety of other active compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity.

Interestingly, topical application of thyme oil in combination with essential oils of rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood seems to improve hair growth for those with the autoimmune skin condition alopecia areata. They showed a 44 percent improvement after seven months of treatment with the essential oil combo.

Take Care

While the herb thyme is very safe, you should always exercise caution when working with essential oils. In the case of essential oil of common thyme, don’t use it if you have high blood pressure, and it’s best to avoid it if you’re pregnant. It can irritate the mucous membranes and may cause skin irritation in some people. Aromatherapists recommend using it in moderation and always diluted. For example, essential oils are often diluted in carrier oils, such as sweet almond and jojoba oils, that are massaged into the skin. There are very few essential oils you can apply directly to skin undiluted.

On a final note, never swallow essential oils unless under the guidance and direction of a trained aromatherapist. Taking essential oil of thyme internally may lead to dizziness, vomiting, and breathing problems.
