A statement regarding our overly busy and highly stressed society is validated with the new energy drinks popping up all over. Each commercial for the shakes and drinks tout the value of their particular product. It's bad enough that we are a coffee driven society, and that some have substituted caffeinated, carbonated drinks for the breakfast; now we have a plethora of energy drinks.
The active ingredient in energy drinks is caffeine, present in large doses. They also may contain other stimulants such as ephedrine, guarana and ginseng. Energy drinks may contain up to 180mg of caffeine per bottle, compared to a cup of black coffee which contains 80mg. Energy drinks are typically marketed to college students and athletes under the age of 30 and, in some cases, are distributed free to high schools by advertising marketers.
There is legislation in some states to ban the sale of certain high caffeine energy drinks to kids under the age of 18. This is based on the side effects that some of the ingredients have as a drug interaction with medicines, OTC and other natural products and supplements.
The stimulants in energy drinks can increase the heart and respiratory rates, sometimes leading to heart palpitations and difficulty breathing if taken in large doses. They may also disrupt a person's normal sleep patterns, making it difficult for them to feel well rested.
