Among the protein alternatives, soy protein has been turning a lot of heads. Soy protein is derived from the soybean and is one of the only plant proteins to be near equivalent in terms of nutrition to proteins derived from other meat sources. Once genetically modified, it is the only complete plant protein (meaning it contains all the essential amino acids needed by the human body) and a very good alternative for those who consume no animal protein such as vegetarians or vegans.
There are many claimed health benefits to soy protein. Those who consume a diet high in soy in place of animal protein have lower serum concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides. Although this may not be due exclusively to soy consumption, this may very well be due to the fact that many people consuming large amounts of soy are also vegetarians, meaning they consume more fruits and veggies and typically have diets lower in saturated fat than those that consume animal products.
There are many research studies that claim soy is a wonder food and that this bean is capable of reducing the risk of certain cancers such as prostate and breast cancer due to it's isoflavanoid compounds. However, many of these studies are funded through companies, which sell soy and soy products, and because of this the results can be questionable. There have been many other studies, which were funded independently that show differing results. In fact, these studies show that due to the estrogen like qualities of soy, consuming soy in those at risk or those who already have breast cancer may worsen the progression of the disease by stimulating cancer cell growth.
Again, some studies that were founded by certain vegan societies claim that soy is good for bone health and that consuming soy may reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis but other studies tend to differ. Other studies have shown that soy may actually block the absorption of vitamin D and calcium, which has an adverse reaction on bone health.
Due to such conflicting results it is evident that more research is needed to confirm the exact role soy protein plays in our body's health.
