Pain is a sign that something is not right in our bodies. It is a common health concern that everyone deals with from time to time and knowing proper pain relief is important. This health concern can be caused from a disease, a physical injury or even emotional upset. Pain that results from physical injury can typically be treated through various means including medications.
Keep in mind, pain is very subjective and mild pain to others may be more severe in another individual. However, physical pain that is mild to moderate can often be treated with analgesics such as acetaminophen. Analgesics can also reduce pain associated with fevers. Pain associated with inflammation such as back injuries and typical sports injuries can be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as ibuprofen and naproxen. For more severe pain codeine can be combined with analgesics for pain relief. Often this combination is used to treat period pain, migraines and dental pain.
It is important to never give aspirin to a young infant as this has been associated with the development of Rey's Syndrome. This syndrome can cause irreversible liver and brain damage and in more severe cases it can result in the death of the infant. NSAID drugs are notorious for causing GI distress such as bleeding and because of this those with liver disease, kidney disease or other GI disorders are advised to stay away from this type of treatment for pain.
In addition to pain medications, other methods of pain relief include alternating between hot and cold compresses, relaxation techniques, massaging and biofeedback techniques.
