It's just not socially acceptable to be in a bad mood, feel bad, or to be depressed. While it is totally normal to feel this way occasionally, medical and media attention on long term depression has brought feeling down as one of our health concerns.
While medication used to be the choice for depression, the flurry of lawsuits against the pharmaceutical companies on the various cash cow drugs they dole out has also brought a new attention to natural and alternative mood enhancers.
There is a fine dance in the balance of the two major brain chemicals that govern mood: serotonin and melatonin. One of the most popular alternatives in addressing our health concerns regarding depression is St. John's Wort. St. John's wort is well known as one of the mood enhancers for its ability to improve well-being in patients with mild to moderate depression. In a review of the medical literature published summer 2006, researchers analyzed randomized, controlled trials of St. John's wort to determine its efficacy. All studies demonstrated a significant drop in the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores for clients taking St. John's wort compared with a placebo or pharmaceutical antidepressants.
