Lip enhancement, also called lip augmentation, refers to the process of physically altering and changing the shape of otherwise normal, healthy lips.

Lip enhancement involves reshaping the visible portion of the lip for aesthetic purposes. The surgery is recommended for anyone who would like added fullness to the upper and/or lower portions of the lip and are in otherwise good health.

There are three generally accepted lip augmentations: lip filler injections, implants and surgical procedures. Lip injections are the most common form of lip enhancement. The most common injections are collagen and fat. Fat injections can have permanent results. The fat is often taken from the patient from areas such as the thigh under local anesthesia. Hyaluronic injections such as restylane are also available and are more long lasting as these injections last in the soft tissue of the lips.

The use of implants usually requires the 2.4 to 3.4mm implants inserted under the tendons found in the lower and upper lips.

Surgical changes to the lip include lip lifts and changes to the shape of the cupid's bow of the lip. Swelling after the surgeries usually appears between seven and 10 days, and post operative visits are required to ensure proper healing. Since this is a health concern of cosmetic proportions there are of course risks involved such as allergic reactions and infections. Those who suffer from health concerns such as herpes lesions on the face, facial nerve disorders, diabetes, hypertension or autoimmune diseases should not be considered for lip enhancement surgery.
