Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a health concern affecting more and more people every year. It is a chronic gastrointestinal disease that is characterized by abdominal pain and cramping, bloating, depression and fatigue.
Irritable bowel syndrome seems to be a health concern of those with anxiety and stress above average. Stress seems to worsen the symptoms of IBS. Researchers and doctors have not found the underlying cause to IBS although it is presumed that those who suffer from IBS have an overly sensitive colon and may be immunocompromised to some degree. People with IBS may have limited motility in their intestines or may have spasmodic control of their colon, causing uncomfortable GI distress.
There is no treatment to cure IBS, the best a doctor can do is try to prescribe a remedy to alleviate symptoms. Often lifestyle changes are encouraged to alleviate stress, such as starting an exercise regimen, and dietary changes are advised. Avoiding items that are simulative to the intestines, such as caffeine and increasing dietary fiber is a couple of the dietary recommendations made to those suffering from IBS. Low dose anti-depressants and counseling in may be prescribed to those with cases of more severe emotional distress. As there is no cure for IBS, one who is diagnosed with it can expect to have life-long issues and are encouraged to actively pursue techniques which may alleviate symptoms and stick with them. Often IBS can cause further complications such as depression, malnutrition from avoiding certain problematic foods and dehydration from chronic diarrhea.
