A health concern that affects over half the population by the time of age 50 is hemorrhoids.
Swollen veins inside or outside the anal canal are considered hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can be internal or external, external being, those being around the opening of the anus being the most common. These can be painful, irritated and most of all embarrassing for suffers.
There are many causes of hemorrhoids, making them one of the most common health concerns. They can be caused from excessive sitting, straining during a bowel movement, being overweight or pregnancy. The downward force of the fetus and constant hormonal changes are the cause of hemorrhoids during pregnancy, especially during the last six months of pregnancy.
The symptoms of hemorrhoids are itching, bleeding as evidenced on toilet paper or in stool and pain associated with swelling. Usually, hemorrhoids are not dangerous or life threatening. Internal hemorrhoids can be small to large and cause bright red bleeding. External hemorrhoids cause some bleeding but usually blood pools at the opening of the anus forming a painful blood clot.
Hemorrhoids can be diagnosed through an exam during a physical with a doctor. For external hemorrhoids, home care is usually the treatment prescribed. This can include using over-the-counter creams and ointments, adding fiber to diet to decrease straining associated with constipation and warm baths in the tub to reduce swelling. However, internal hemorrhoids, if severe enough may need further treatments such as rubber band ligation where a band is placed around the hemorrhoid to constrict blood flow, infrared coagulation where the hemorrhoid is burned away, and in extreme cases surgery may be required to remove the enlarged blood vessel.
