Fibromyalgia is one of the leading health concerns among women and is a chronic disease characterized by pain felt all over the body. This condition seems to affect women more often than men and those with a rheumatic disease also seem to be at higher risk for developing. It is considered a musculoskeletal disease as pain seems to be progressively worse in areas such as joints, muscles tendons and other softer tissue laden areas. Symptoms are wide and vary. They can include fatigue or tiredness, overall muscle and body aches, depression, headaches and pain in tender areas such as the neck, head and chest. Pain from this condition can range from mild to life altering that labels a person disabled.
The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, making those that suffer from this health concern more frustrated than ever. Some possible explanations include genetics, trauma, either physical or emotional and possibly infections. Some institutes claim that the overall pain is caused by a disturbance in the sleep cycle or a problem with electrical impulses in the brain.
Treatment varies as well. In mild cases of fibromyalgia, a simple change in one's environment to eliminate stressors may do the trick to eliminate pain. Usually an exercise regimen is prescribed to try and alleviate the stress felt on the joints that may cause pain. Slow stretches and light activity may improve symptoms. Certain drugs may be prescribed such as anti-depressants and anti-inflammatory drugs. Usually more than one treatment is prescribed in an attempt to combat the variety of symptoms experienced.
