Eye care is important in all of us in order to prevent certain health concerns. The eye is a complex sensory organ and is highly sensitive to disease. The eye itself is a round hollow sphere filled with fluid like gel and about one inch in diameter.
There are many common health concerns that can sometimes be treated with proper eye care; one of them being blepharitis. This is a fairly common disorder caused by inflammation of the eyelid. Symptoms are typically a red, scaly inflamed eyelid and typically loss of eyelashes may occur. This condition is caused by a bacterial infection and can be treated by applying hot compresses to the infected eye along with an eyelid scrub. In more severe cases antibiotics may need to be prescribed.
Contact dermatitis is typically an allergic reaction of the eye and is caused by contact of the eye with a foreign substance such as a new soap or makeup. It can cause intense itching and swelling, scarring or redness of the eye. Typically antihistamines such as over the counter medicines can be taken by mouth to alleviate symptoms.
A sty or hordeolum, is a typical health concern in eye care. A sty is a swelling of one of the glands within the eyelid. It is characterized by a tender, hard bump on the eyelid. Typically this can be cured with hot compresses applied to the affected area several times a day. If the sty is so severe that they eye is swollen shut antibiotics may need to be prescribed.
