An expectorant is a common prescription for common cold and flu related breathing problems. An expectorant functions to increase the body's ability to eject the excess mucus, thereby thinning the mucus lining of the air pipe to its normal levels, mainly through increases in expectorant coughs. This will also lubricate air passages as the mucus is expelled.
Many cough medicines will be labeled as expectorants while they have very limited to no effect on mucus ejection or breaking down of the thick mucus buildup within the lungs. Expectorants are more mucolytic agents rather than cough suppressants, which most cold medicines are.
