Hearing health is one of many health concerns today, especially for the elderly.
We hear through a combination of different means. The cochlea, a structure found in the inner ear, is surrounded by fluid and contains little hairs on the surface. Pressure waves that produce sound cause the fluid around the hairs to move and thus stimulate the auditory nerve. Aside from pressure waves, bone vibrations (both in the ear and skull) and tympanic membrane (eardrum) motions in the middle ear can all cause the fluid to move and thus stimulate the hair to agitate the auditory nerve that produces what we interpret as sound.
There are two types of hearing loss, conductive and sensoineural. Conductive hearing loss results from physical problems with the movement of sound waves through the ear. This can be caused by a physical obstruction, an ear infection, or trauma to the eardrum. Sensoineural hearing loss is caused by damage to the hairs on the cochlea. Head trauma, vascular disease, pressure trauma, such as those from underwater diving, and acoustic trauma from exposure to prolong loud noises can all cause sensoineural hearing loss.
If hearing suddenly becomes a health concern for you, home health care may be enough to treat the hearing loss if it is temporary. A hard buildup of earwax may obstruct hearing and there are over-the-counter medications that can be used to soften the wax to make it easier for removal. If an ear infection is the cause of your hearing loss, taking Tylenol or other fever reducers may be able to help and tube placement for chronic ear infections may be able to return hearing to normal. If hearing loss is chronic, the only treatment plan may be to invest in hearing aids with a visit to the doctor.
