There are many uses surrounding the diuretic, from cosmetic to actual medical uses. Diuretics are often a safer alternative in medicine than using powerful blood pressure medications that can affect the actual function of the cardiac tissue as well as that of the arteries and blood vessels. There are fewer health concerns using a diuretic since the body itself creates hormones with diuretic properties, or anti-diuretic properties, to alter its water balance. Health concerns are raised, however, when using diuretics in an already dehydrated person.
It may seem silly, but it is very important to have a high water intake if you are on diuretics. The body will do what it needs to with the water taken in, but there must be enough water available to support the cerebral spinal fluid levels, saturation of the organs and also available for muscle function as water is crucial to energy production as well as contraction. Health issues occur when a diuretic can start negatively impacting crucial water levels, which can be potentially fatal.
Other than allergies, that is the main concern for anyone taking a diuretic. Whether it be for lowering blood plasma levels in a person experiencing hypertension, or taken by a bodybuilder in the days leading up to a competition in order to drain the water from the subcutaneous layer (under the skin) to get a more lean and cut look, it is important to understand that you do still need water, and perhaps need to drink more while on the diuretic than when you aren't.
