A sometimes embarrassing health concern for us all is being diaphoretic. Diaphoresis is a state of excessive sweating. It can be associated with a medical condition or physical activity. The cause of diaphoresis is wide and varied. Excessive physical motion, certain foods such as peppers, anxiety conditions, fever, palpitations, vomiting, hypoglycemia and high environmental heat may all be causes of diaphoresis. Some may suffer from hyperhidrosis in which their sweat glands are over active causing a diaphoretic state. Treatments for this health concern vary as well from mild to more caustic. A simple treatment for diaphoresis may be simple antiperspirants. Aluminum chloride is a typically prescribed antiperspirant that seems to have promising effects. A 10 to 15 percent solution may be prescribed. Since sweat glands are controlled by nerves, sometimes medications that block the stimulation of these nerves such as beta blockers bay be prescribed. Botox and iontophoresis are more extreme treatments for diaphoresis but may be helpful in those suffering from more severe diaphoretic states. During botox, botulinium toxin is injected into the area of profuse sweating, usually the underarms and the toxin causes paralysis of the nerves, preventing further sweating. The effect of a single injection of botox may provide relief from sweating for a few months at a time, those with more severe sweating may need additional injections. In ionophoresis, an electrical current is used to temporarily turn of the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. This treatment may take up to 10 sessions before an improvement in sweating is seen.
