A growing health concern, in America due to the growing prevalence of obesity, is diabetes. There are three types of diabetes, gestational, type I and type II.
Type I diabetes is a health concern that is typically diagnosed in younger children and is often referred to as juvenile diabetes. This is classified as an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas is no longer able to produce insulin, a hormone needed for the utilization of glucose by the body for energy. Only about five to ten percent of those diagnosed with diabetes are type I. Treatment for this disease involves insulin therapy through a pump or daily injections.
Type II diabetes is the most common form. In this form of diabetes the body is still producing insulin although inefficiently. The pancreas is not producing enough insulin needed for proper utilization of glucose and causes a buildup of glucose in the blood. Long term high blood sugar can cause complications such as eye disease, kidney failure and even possibly necrosis of the limbs which eventually requires amputation. Treatment for this type of diabetes typically involves dietary changes and weight loss as well as medications to increase insulin sensitivity.
During pregnancy, many women may be diagnosed with gestational diabetes. This usually occurs around the 28th week of pregnancy. This type of diabetes affects around four percent of pregnancies. Treatment is vital as constant high blood sugars may cause the baby to grow too large and this could cause complications in the baby and birthing process. Treatment may include dietary changes as well as medications such as insulin and in some severe cases, weight loss of even a few pounds may be encouraged if the woman is severely overweight.
