One health concern that affects us all, as we all have teeth, is dental care. Tooth decay simply happens and is a natural part of the aging process. However, we can prevent the worst from occurring and even delay it until very old age.
Proper dental care is simple. It includes proper brushing techniques, regular visits to the dentist and flossing. Visits to the dentist should be yearly. Precautions to preserve your teeth can include not smoking and limiting foods high in sugar and acid, such as candy and soda (a double whammy, contains both sugar AND acid).
Your teeth are comprised of many layers, with bacteria residing on the outer layer of your teeth, the enamel. The bacteria sit on the teeth and consume sugars. The byproduct of this consumption is an acid that eats away at the outer layers. Eventually, this leads to a pin-sized hole, or the beginnings of dental caries or cavities.
Cavities are progressive and eventually will lead to the decay of the whole tooth, reaching the pulp of the tooth and causing severe pain. If treated immediately, a cavity can be cured with a simple filling and visit to your dentist. If the decay has reached the pulp of the tooth, a root canal may be needed or worse yet, extraction of the whole tooth.
Other problems such as teeth grinding, gum disease and gingivitis can all cause problems to the teeth. Teeth grinding may be a small problem and can be treated with a teeth guard.
