Proper brain functioning is vital for a long, healthy and happy life. As we age, improper brain functioning such as dementia and loss of memory becomes a major health concern for us all.
There are many substances available for supplementation to use for brain support. One of these is Docosahexaenoic acid or DHA. DHA is a vital fatty acid that comprises 50% of the fatty acid found in the brain. As we age, DHA levels decline so it hypothesized that supplementation with this fatty acid may be good for brain support. Many people supplement with fish oil as this is a high source of DHA.
Phosphatidylserine (PS) is also a commonly supplemented compound for brain support. This compound is one of the structural components of cell membranes found within the brain and supports healthy levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is needed for proper brain functioning and declines with age. Supplementing with this seems to be beneficial for memory.
Ginkgo biloba and rosemary have been shown to promote healthy blood circulation in the brain and is often recommended by physicians as preventative health measures again declining brain functioning.
Due to the fact that certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies have severe neurological symptoms it is hypothesized that supplementing with these vitamins may preserve brain health. Some of these vitamins include B6, folate and vitamin E. A lack of these vitamins seems to be correlated with high levels of homocysteine which is harmful to brain health. Vitamin E is important for the integrity of cell membranes found within the brain.
