Glucose is a sugar that is derived from carbohydrates. We consume these carbs, our bodies break them down and then glucose is released into the bloodstream to be utilized by the cells for energy. In some conditions, such as diabetes, a hormone named insulin doesn't work properly to signal the chain reaction that allows glucose to enter the cell. This results in high blood sugar.
Testing blood sugar levels is important in those that have diabetes. Testing can be done through the use of a glucose monitor at home or through blood tests at the doctors. Those with diabetes must check their blood sugar and check often to ensure levels stay relatively stable. Timing of the test is important to understand the readings. Fasting blood sugar refers to a measure of blood sugar that is taken after at least a 12 hour fast, such as an overnight fast. Normal fasting blood sugar levels should typically read below 100 mg/dl and any higher then this is indicative of prediabetes or diabetes. A 2 hour postprandial blood sugar reading is that which is taken 2 hours after a meal is eaten. Typically this reading should not be above 180 mg/dl in a healthy person.
