An antispasmodic falls into a class of drugs that is often prescribed to treat health concerns that include conditions such as spastic colon, irritable bowel syndrome and those that suffer from stomach ulcers.
Antispasmodics are in a class of drugs called barbiturates. Barbiturates can cause decreased perspiration and thus those taking the drugs are at an increased risk for heat stroke.
Antispasmodics work to slow the activity of the brain that causes overactive muscle contractions. These types of drugs may be dangerous in that they have been known to be habit forming and thus should be used with caution. These types of drugs may cause disorientated thinking and should not be used with alcohol as this may increases dizziness and drowsiness associated with the drug.
These drugs should not be used if you have any of the following health concerns: active bleeding, certain muscle disorders, porphyria or a paralytic GI condition.
Antispasmodics can be harmful to the fetus and should not be used in pregnant women.
Older adults may exhibit side effects on this drug like, dry mouth, constipation and problems with urination. This drug should be taken with a full glass of water to avoid unfavorable side effects.
Antispasmodics are not recommended for those who regularly take drugs that cause drowsiness such as cold medicine and muscle relaxers.
Other antispasmodics that are considered alternative forms include peppermint and mebeverine. Peppermint has been used since ancient times for its antispasmodic qualities and has been used as an effective treatment in irritable bowel syndrome.
