Allergies are a huge health concern for everyone, as we all suffer from them one way or another. An allergy is defined as an over exaggerated immune response to something that is not typically considered harmful. Both genetics and environmental factors can influence they way an individual will react to allergens. Allergies can be caused by animals (pet dander), plants (pollen), foods, drugs and beauty products; pretty much anything can cause an allergic reaction.
Symptoms of an allergy vary and can include red, swollen eyes, hives or other type of skin rash, vomiting, wheezing, coughing, itching, diarrhea and more severe allergies can cause anaphylaxis which can be life threatening. Allergies that cause more serious health concerns such as anaphylaxis require immediate treatment with epinephrine, usually in the form of an epi pen.
There are several types of medicine available for those suffering from allergies such as antihistamines, corticosteroids and decongestants. Antihistamines come in the form of pills, eye drops, injection and nasal spray and work to block histamine, an inflammatory agent in the body. These can typically be found over the counter. Decongestants work to relieve a stuffy nose. Decongestants in nasal spray should be avoided in excess as they can worsen congestion. Corticosteroids also work as an anti-inflammatory and may be prescribed to those suffering from more severe symptoms such as hives through pills or injections.
A common way to identify allergies is to have a skin test performed. This involves using needles laced with certain allergens that are placed into the skin to set off an allergic reaction. Once allergens are identified it is important to try and avoid those allergens at all costs.
