There has been a flurry of media and medical attention on the topics of prohormones.
When dealing with the topics of bodybuilding supplements and prohormones, there should first be a more scientific explanation.
A prohormone is simply one that requires an enzymic or other chemical interaction before becoming an active hormone. As example is norandrostendione.
Norandrostenedione can be converted into 19-nortestosterone (A.K.A. Nandrolone) by the enzyme 17b-hydroxysteroidehydrogenase (17b-HSD) at a rate of 5.61%, though it more commonly interacts with the aromatase enzymes producing norestrogens much more efficiently (gyno, female pattern fat deposits and no libido has seldom been anyone's goal). A very popular prohormone is 1-AD which requires enzymic alteration to become the now well-known AAS 1-Testosterone.
Prohormones are steroid hormones and above all exogenous hormonal substances. If you are still growing, pregnant or are succeptible to the effects of estrogen and DHT formation, it's wise to stay away from bodybuilding supplements that contain prohormones.
Prohormones should not be compared to illegal ergogenic aids for a number of reasons. The first is that they need to convert to a target hormone, which is responsible for most of the anabolic effects. Because this requires naturally occurring enzymes the amount that is converted is limited, and therefore so are the results from taking it. With steroids, the effects are dose-dependent = the more you take, the more you gain. Secondly any such reference is misleading because nothing that is legal comes even close to steroids and the gains they illicit.
According to a study by Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepotology: "Despite being classified as class III controlled substances, anabolic androgenic steroids are still a cause for serious hepatotoxicity in the United States. Some of these anabolic androgenic steroids are being marketed as dietary supplements. Although the Food and Drug Administration is making concerted efforts to regulate this, increased vigilance also is required from the medical profession." Other research shows prohormones may have limited effects unless methylated, and even then may have higher potential to cause hepatoxicity than injected steroid compounds.
This is meant as information only. Always confer with your major medical provider before adding anything to your diet. When taking medication, OTC and supplements, consult with an independent pharmacist that specializes in drug interactions.
