Toothpaste is a beauty product that has been used for as long at 4,000 years. In the beginning, people were primarily interested in removing stains from their teeth and used harsh, sometimes toxic, chemicals as abrasions to remove undesirable colors from the teeth. Now we know much more concerning dental health and toothpastes are used for the removal of foreign particles in teeth that can cause dental caries and decay.
This beauty product contains many different ingredients to maintain the integrity of teeth. Fluoride in the form of sodium fluoride is commonly added in many types of toothpaste. Fluoride strengthens teeth and in turn reduces decay. Other ingredients include abrasives and sudsers. Abrasives such as hydrated silica, calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) all work by scrubbing the outside of the teeth to remove plaque and loosen particles on the surface of the teeth. Sudsers, also called foaming agents work to lower the surface tension of water so that bubbles can be formed. These bubbles also help to remove particles from the surface of teeth. Common sudsers include sodium lauryl sulfoacetate and sodium stearyl lactate.
Toothpastes often have flavors and sweeteners added to them to make them more palatable to the tongue. The most common flavors of toothpaste are mint flavors such as wintergreen, spearmint and peppermint, cinnamon and some more exotic flavors may include clove, anise and other spices. Common sweeteners added to toothpaste are alcohol sugars such as sorbitol and glycerin. These sweeteners are added to toothpaste because they are not known to cause dental caries.
