A toner is a beauty product that many women include in their daily facial regimen. With all the new products on the market it is hard to know what is necessary for skin care and what is just a hype: something skin care companies are putting out there to expand their wallets. So, what is a toner?
A toner, simply put, is a liquid or a lotion beauty product that is used in conjunction with other facial products to clean and freshen the skin. Toner and astringent are often used interchangeably although some beauty gurus argue adamantly argue their difference. Many toners claim to remove dirt and makeup that is left behind from regular cleansing of the skin. Some also claim to tighten skin and minimize the appearance of pores. Others claim to have a moisturizing effect on the skin while removing oil and other dirt. Depending of the brand of toner, they claim to do different things.
Other beauty experts claim that toners are a waste of money and just a ploy set out by big beauty companies to trick people into buying another product they don't need. Toners often claim that they can help even out the skin tone by removing splotchiness. However, one of the main ingredients in toners is alcohol, which has been proven to irritate and dry out the skin, resulting in more blotchiness, not an even skin tone.
The bottom line is that if you personally like the way your face feels after using a toner then go for it! However if you were one of the people using toners because you felt you had to, never fear, feel free to eliminate this step from your beauty regimen as your facial cleanser will work just fine on it's own. Toner usage really is a personal preference.
