We all have to worry about lip care, especially in the winter months in which our lips take the most damage. Luckily there are beauty products on the market that are made to protect and replenish damage caused from wind, cold and sun.
Firstly it is important to know that at times dry, chapped lips can be a sign of improper nutrition and that a proper intake of veggies, such as those rich in vitamin C, and including enough water in the diet can sometimes reverse the damaged look of chapped lips.
However, chapped, damaged lips are not always a sign of a nutritional problem but a sign of environmental damage that can be corrected through the proper selection of certain beauty products. For proper lip care, prevention is the key. It is important to choose products that contain moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin, beeswax, petroleum or other natural oils. Choosing lip balms that contain few ingredients, typically no more than five, decreases the chance that lips will be irritated by unnecessary components.
Some chemicals found in lip balms can cause an allergic reaction and exacerbate the issue already at hand. An allergic reaction on the lips is typically characterized by dry, red itchy lips. Lip products that contain fragrances, menthol, cloves, parabens and salicylic acid are typically best to avoid as these ingredients are notorious for causing irritation to the lips.
Some worry that lip products may be addicting but there is no scientific research to back this up so apply as much as you like, there are no harmful side effects! For best use apply at least four to six times daily to obtain healthy, soft supple lips.
