Deodorants are beauty products used to mask the smell that is caused by perspiration.
Sweating is a natural biological function that is needed for the regulation of proper body temperature. There are over 3 million sweat glands found on the surface of our skin. We sweat at all times but more so when our bodies are exposed to heat, is undergoing physical exertion, stress of nervousness. In our underarms there are two types of glands, apocrine and eccrine. Eccrine glands are those that produce the majority of the sweat in our underarms. Sweat by itself has no odor. It only acquires an unfavorable odor once it is fermented by bacteria that are present on the surface of our skin.
Deodorants work by trying to prevent bacteria from fermenting sweat to eliminate the unfavorable smell. They may also contain other beauty products within them such as perfumes to mask the odor. If applied more than once deodorants may work by preventing bacteria from growing and reproducing in the underarm area.
Deodorants are not the same as antiperspirant, although they are commonly confused as the same. A deodorant simply masks and tries to alleviate the smell caused by sweating where as an antiperspirant tries to stop or eliminate sweating all together. There are some products which are classified as both; these are typically antiperspirants that contain a fragrance. Many deodorant/antiperspirant combos contain a few active ingredients to prevent sweating such as aluminum chloride, aluminum hydroxybromide and other aluminum ions. As aluminum is absorbed into the skin it attracts water with it which causes the sweat gland to swell shut, eliminating sweating.
