Bar soaps are beauty products that are used by most everyone and are used to clean and remove oily buildup and dirt from the skin's surface. Soap is made via a process called saponification in which a lye, also called an alkali, is mixed with a type of fat, either a vegetable oil or animal fat.
Bar soaps, unlike liquid soaps, are beauty products that contain some of the most aggressive surfactants. This means that they are the best at bubbling and removing dirt and grime from the surface of the skin. However, these surfactants are not as easily removed from the skin as liquid soaps and therefore can be more irritating to the skin.
There are a few different types of bar soaps such as superfatted, transparent, syndet and combination bars. Superfatted bars are those that are created by a process called incomplete saponification. This means that certain chemicals were added to the saponification process so that not all the fat is utilized, creating a fattier soap than normal. These soaps are good for moisturizing the skin which makes it one of the least irritating bar soaps on the market. Transparent soaps are a common type of bar soap that has glycerin added. Glycerin works as a moisturizer by reducing the irritability of transparent bar soaps. Syndet bar soaps are those that are made with artificial surfactents. The fats used in these soaps are made in other ways besides saponification and that makes these bar soaps some of the mildest soaps in the market. Combination bars are those that contain different types of cleaners in them and are designed to maximize cleaning with the least amount of irritation possible
