Aromatherapy is a rapidly growing modality of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Aromatherapy specifically refers to the use of essential plant oils for therapeutic purposes. This is usually through direct application to the body, such as massage, or inhalation i.e.: diffusing a scent in a room.
Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the blossoms, roots, leaves, stems or bark of plants, through steam distillation or mechanical expression. These are very highly concentrated oils and are usually diluted in carrier oil, such as almond, jojoba, sesame or even olive oil. When diffusing the scent in the air, the essential oil may be diluted in water. Many essential oils have been found to have natural antimicrobial properties, making them a great choice for steam inhalation, air freshening and topical uses.
Essential oils have also been suggested for medical uses, but have not widely been tested or studied. Anecdotal evidence suggests that aromatherapy or essential oils can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions including acne, arthritis, digestive disorders, headaches and inflammation, to name a few.
A growing popularity is to incorporate the aromatherapy experience into the beauty products that are used every day. Existing natural and organic products have the added essentials oils included with the beauty products, giving the user the benefit of great feelings of well-being and the reduction of stress and tension. Beauty products manufacturers are marketing their products to not only be healthy for skin, hair and body - but also as an overall quality experience.
Some of the common essentials oils and their uses in beauty products and aromatherapy:
Lavender: generally calming, used for insomnia, headache, depression and skin conditions like insect bites, acne, burns and athlete's foot.
Eucalyptus: an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic essential oil. Commonly used for colds, bronchitis, muscle aches and pains, headaches and is a natural insect repellant.
Ylang Ylang: an antidepressant, relaxant and aphrodisiac. Used to treat depression, high blood pressure, digestive upsets and may improve mood, impotence and stress related disorders.
Rosemary: a stimulant, antifungal and antiparasitic. Good for fatigue, stress related disorders, muscle pain, poor circulation, dandruff and eczema.
Peppermint: digestive, cooling and mentally refreshing. Good for indigestion, nausea, travel sickness, muscle pain, asthma and toothache.
Clary Sage: warming, soothing, antidepressant. Used for menstrual problems, depression, anxiety, headache, throat infections, dandruff, ulcers and disorders of the genital-urinary system.
