Glutamine is one of what is referred to as "non-essential" amino acids. Large quantities are found in the muscles of the body. It's referred to as the smart-vitamin, because of the attributes of glutamine to pass through the blood brain barrier. However, the term is misleading, as it isn't a vitamin.
As one of the amino acids, glutamine is used in the muscles for muscle protein synthesis as well as treatment of wasting muscles after an illness or operation.
People suffering from arthritis, fibrosis, connective tissue disease, peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, as well as epilepsy, fatigue, impotence and senility may find benefit from an increase of this nutrient, as well as people busy with alcohol abuse withdrawal and patients living with HIV.
Although they occur naturally in many foods, the flavor contributions made by glutamic acid and other amino acids were only scientifically identified early in the twentieth century. The patented process resulted in what we now know as monosodium-glutamate (MSG). People suffering from allergic reactions should not add MSG to their diet.
Glutamine is found in many of the high protein foods that we eat: meat, beans, fish, and dairy. It's also found in some vegetables such as raw parsley and spinach.
There are some excellent supplement products on the market: Nature's Best, Vpx Sports, and Prolab Supplement.
When looking for supplements always do your homework and make sure it is a high quality reputable product that contains a majority of the ingredient and is made in the U.S. Other countries do not often have the same manufacturing requirements and the environments are less-than-sanitary.
Always confer with your medical provider before adding anything to your diet, including all information regarding any other drugs, OTC, supplements and integrative medicine you might be taking.
