CLA or Conjugated Linoleic Acid, is a naturally occurring nutrient that is found in a wide variety of foods like beef, turkey and some dairy products. There exists evidence that using CLA can lead to increases in lean body mass and a decrease in body fat safely and effectively. CLA has been widely studied for several years now and in past studies CLA was shown to be an anti-carcinogen, was shown to reduce the adverse effects induced by immune stimulation and was shown to enhance growth and improve blood lipid profiles.

In more recent studies, scientists have examined CLA's effects on fat metabolism and lean muscle gain in laboratory animals and have discovered some very promising results. These results have shown that taking CLA in small dosages has been sufficient to show a positive effect on fat loss and lean mass gain. In addition, there have been many promising studies on humans that have just been released. In a recent study, sixty overweight people who were not allowed to diet were randomly assigned to take either a 9-gram placebo of olive oil or 1.7 grams, 3.4 grams, 5.1 grams or 6.8 grams of CLA daily for 12 weeks. Their body fat composition was measured at the start, middle and end of that time.

The CLA group had a significant reduction in weight, they lost about 2.2 pounds, and change in body composition. The researchers found that overwhelmingly, this loss was from body fat, and didn't affect overall weight or their body mass index. The 3.4-gram dose appeared to be the most effective, safest dose.

There appeared to be no side effects from taking CLA. At the same time, questionnaires done every two weeks during the trial revealed that those taking CLA were less depressed, had fewer stomach problems and could concentrate and sleep better.
