According to the world's foremost researcher on pyruvate, Dr. Ronald Stanko of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, enormous amounts of pyruvate (30-100 grams daily) are not necessary to realize significant losses in overfat individuals. Dr. Stanko, who has been called "The Father Of Pyruvate", recently stated that positive results could be obtained from as little as 5 grams of pyruvate per day. The lower doses that Dr. Stanko recommends are based on non-published research with his own group of test subjects. Now, an independent and highly prestigious study conducted by medical doctors and dietitians at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York confirms the low-dose effectiveness of pyruvate! The New Study Dr. Stanko was not involved in the new study. It was actually a joint effort between medical doctors and dietitians from Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, and two other nutrition organizations*. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of a pyruvate-based formula on weight, body composition, as well as energy and fatigue levels in individuals who were 10-15 lbs overfat. Fifty-three male and female subjects were instructed to follow a specific 2000-calorie-per-day diet as well as a defined five-day per week exercise program. They were then randomly placed into three different groups: a control group, a placebo group, or the pyruvate group. All groups followed the exact same diet and exercise program for six weeks. The placebo group received capsules of inactive placebo (maltodextrin) which provided about the same calories as pyruvate. The control group did not receive any capsules. The pyruvate group received capsules that provided them with 6 grams of pyruvate daily, as well as 250 mcg of chromium. Outstanding Fat Loss Interestingly, when all of the numbers were in and the statistics completed, no significant change in bodyweight was found in any of the three groups. But despite no discernable change in bodyweight, there was a significant change in body composition-that is the ratio of body fat to lean body mass (i.e., muscle). The researchers found that the participants ingesting the pyruvate lost 4.8 lbs of body fat during the six week study. This is a loss equivalent to 12.4% of their original amount of body fat. This loss of 4.8 lbs was quite a contrast to the 0.1 lb gain in body fat found in the control group, and the 0.2 lb loss observed in the placebo group. The 4.8 lb loss of body fat in six weeks becomes even more significant when you consider that the study participants were ingesting 2000 calories a day, and not the 500 or 1000 calories used in some of the original pyruvate studies. Dramatic Muscle Gains You may be wondering how, if the pyruvate group lost 4.8 lbs of fat, their bodyweight didn't change. The answer is really exciting. The reason their weight didn't change is that they also gained 3.4 lbs of lean body mass! This increase of 3.4 lbs lean body mass is in direct contrast to the small gain of 0.4 lbs in the control group, and the small loss of 0.3 lbs in the placebo group. It is also important to consider that the study participants did not engage in any heavy duty weight training. They only performed a 30 minute routine of aerobic and anaerobic exercise five days per week. Clearly, the pyruvate played an integral role in the gain of lean muscle. Higher Energy Levels The reduction of body fat and increase in lean body mass were not the only positive effects seen with pyruvate. The group ingesting the pyruvate/chromium capsules also experienced an 18% increase in vigor or energy levels, which is highly significant when compared to the increase of only 1.8% and 4.5% found in the control and placebo groups, respectively. The pyruvate group also experienced a 71% decrease in fatigue levels, compared to a 48% reduction in fatigue with the placebo group.
