Under ideal conditions Gamma Linolenic acid and arachidonic acid can be converted from linoleic acid. In turn, GLA produces beneficial hormone-like compounds called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins affect the function of virtually every system in the body.

GLA should theoretically convert to Prostaglandins but many things can interfere with this conversion. Advanced age, diabetes, high alcohol intake, eczema, cyclic mastitis, viral infections, excessive saturated fat intake, elevated cholesterol, processed oils, heated oils, and some vitamin/mineral deficiencies all contribute to the interference of GLA conversion.
