L-Glutamine Information:

Glutamine for Sports & Fitness

What is it?
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid (protein building block) in the body and is involved in more metabolic processes than any other amino acid. Glutamine is converted to glucose when more glucose is required by the body as an energy source. It serves as a source of fuel for cells lining the intestines. Without it, these cells waste away. It is also used by white blood cells and is important for immune function.

Where is it found?
Glutamine is found in many foods high in protein, such as fish, meat, beans, and dairy products.

Why do athletes use it?
Some athletes say that glutamine helps boost the immune system.

What do the advocates say?
Glutamine is the most utilized amino acid in the body. Based on its biochemistry, glutamine is a good supplement for athletes. Glutamine is best taken consistently, on a daily basis, rather than just before or after a hard workout, to build up tissue levels.

Although glutamine is inexpensive and non-toxic, realize that you run the risk of upsetting the balance of the body’s amino acids (as is the case with supplementing with only one of any of the amino acids.

How much is usually taken by athletes?
The amino acid glutamine appears to play a role in several aspects of human physiology that might benefit athletes, including their muscle function and immune system. Intense exercise lowers blood levels of glutamine, which can remain persistently low with overtraining. Glutamine supplementation raises levels of growth hormone at an intake of 2 grams per day, an effect of interest to some athletes because of the role of growth hormone in stimulating muscle growth, and glutamine, given intravenously, was found to be more effective than other amino acids at helping replenish muscle glycogen after exercise. However, glutamine supplementation (30 mg per 2.2 pounds body weight) has not improved performance of short-term, high-intensity exercise such as weightlifting or sprint cycling by trained athletes, and no studies on endurance performance or muscle growth have been conducted. Although the effects of glutamine supplementation on immune function after exercise have been inconsistent, double-blind trials giving athletes glutamine (5 grams after intense, prolonged exercise, then again two hours later) reported 81% having no subsequent infection compared with 49% in the placebo group.

Are there any side effects or interactions?
No significant side effects have been reported in glutamine studies.

L-Glutamine Details:

For years athletes and bodybuilders have been looking for a product to help them recover faster from workouts and competition, keep their muscles well hydrated for maximum growth and provide numerous other benefits in the muscle building process. In recent years most athletes have to understand the benefits of L-Glutamine. Now further research into this topic reveals, the benefits may be greater than we had first thought.

L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and makes up more than 60% of the intramuscular amino acid pool. L-Glutamine plays an important role in many body functions such as proper immune system function, the transfer of nitrogen between organs, precursor to DNA and regulation of protein synthesis and degradation.

Following an intense workout your body needs to replenish glutamine stores to aid in recovery. L-Glutamine can help increase muscle cell hydration and aid in protein synthesis. These and more functions of L-Glutamine can benefit athletes and bodybuilders by improving recovery and performance.

What is L-Glutamine?
L-Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in muscle tissue. It is a nonessential amino acid that can be produced by the body under normal conditions. However, under periods of stress, such as intense workouts, the body may have an increased demand making it a conditionally essential amino acid. Supplementation with L-Glutamine may be an effective way to support sufficient glutamine levels, which may aid in recovery and recuperation.

How can L-Glutamine help with my training and nutrition program?
L-Glutamine may help with:

  • recovery and recuperation,
  • protecting muscle cells from breaking down, and
  • cell volumization.

What is the recommended use for L-Glutamine?
Here's one suggestion. During periods of high-intensity exercise or increased stress to the body, try 2 to 4 grams (1/2-1 tsp) 2 to 3 times daily. Taking L-Glutamine after workouts or before bedtime, times when muscle tissue typically undergoes repair and recuperation, could be particularly effective.
